|Short Bio for Jack Popjes|
Jack was born in the Netherlands and immigrated to Canada in 1950 with his family. He attended Berean Bible College in Calgary. Jack and Jo were married in 1962 and pastored a Baptist church in Innisfail, Alberta, for three years before joining Wycliffe and leaving for Brazil in 1966 with three pre-school daughters. They began linguistic and translation work with the Canela people in 1968.
When the Popjes began work with the Canelas, the villagers were illiterate and there were no believers. By the time the Scriptures in the Canela language were dedicated in 1990, there were many Canela believers, all able to read the Bible and teaching others to read and obey the Word.
After the Popjes left Brazil in 1990, they served Wycliffe Canada as regional representatives. While serving as a rep, Jack honed his skills as a public speaker at numerous conferences and hundreds of promotional banquets.
Jack was appointed by the board as CEO of Wycliffe Canada in 1994 with a mandate to lead the organization through a large number of changes. After two three-year terms as director of Wycliffe Canada, Jack was appointed CEO of Wycliffe Caribbean and asked to strengthen the organization and to recruit and train a successor. He completed this task in May, 2004.
Currently Jack is the Wycliffe Canada's national representative serving as a speaker and writer. He speaks at about sixty-five events per year in Canada, the USA and overseas. He writes a weekly blog INsights & OUTbursts which has nearly 1,000 subscribers around the world. He has published three books, A Poke in the Ribs, and A Kick in the Pants and A Bonk on the Head, which are collections of his best columns.
